Nokia Lumia 710 app: Creative Studio review

Published by Jon Mundy March 27, 2012

While the Nokia Lumia 710 has a perfectly decent 5-megapixel camera, you might not have given too much thought to getting the best quality pictures out of it. Now with Creative Studio Nokia has created a fun and powerful tool for doing just that. Read our Creative Studio review to find out what we think of it.

Nokia Lumia 710 app: Nokia Drive review

The best thing about the Windows Phone OS that runs on both the Nokia Lumia 710 and Nokia Lumia 800 is that it makes everything so easy. Whether you’re glancing at a Live Tile for the weather outlook, initiating a web search or taking a picture, nothing takes more than a few clicks and a few seconds.

Speaking of pictures, it’s very easy to adopt a ‘fire and forget’ approach to photography with the Nokia Lumia 710. That’s cool – it’s set up for that. But if you want to take your photos to the next level, and have a bit of fun in the process, you should really download Creative Studio post-haste. It’s really rather good.

Creative Studio lets you apply all manner of tweaks to your photos. Whether that’s applying funky filters or improving the appearance of a shot, there’s something here for photographers of all persuasions.

First, the filters. Select a photo from the gallery and you can layer any one of 10 custom effects on top. These range from the arty, such as the black and white ‘silkscreen’ effect, to the genuinely useful, like the spot-covering ‘flawless skin’ setting. Our favourite is the ‘sketch’ one, as it makes your photos look like you’ve drawn them by hand. Nice.

Then there are the adjustments. Here you can crop and rotate your pictures, and also play with things like colour contrast and sharpness. If the image is a little dingy, you can increase the exposure or boost the colour. These settings step away from the playful into the genuinely useful.

It’s not just about post-processing either. You can also layer six of the effects onto a live image. This is called ‘Live styles’, and it allows you to preview what the effect will look like, enabling you to compose your shots more carefully.

Panorama is another powerful tool found here, allowing you to compose a single wide-view picture from four stitched-together shots. You don’t have to worry about the joins – Creative Studio handles the precise timing of the shots for you, although the steadier you hold the phone the better!

There are plenty of apps that provide these kinds of editing and enhancement services on Windows Phone, but few if any bring so many together under a single free app. And of course, given that this is a Nokia app, none are as pleasant to look at or as in-tune with the host platform. If you want to add a little more to your Nokia Lumia 710 photography than simple fire-and-forget shots, look no further.
