Nokia Lumia 900 review round-up

Published by Jon Mundy April 05, 2012

We’ll have to wait a little longer for the first Nokia Lumia 900 UK reviews to start filtering through, but that doesn’t mean we have to wait for the first Nokia Lumia 900 US reviews! Ahead of the Windows Phone 7.5 device’s US launch on April 8, the first reviews have appeared from the industry taste-makers. Here’s a round-up of what they have to say.

US launch countdown points the way to Nokia Lumia 900 UK release

There’s a lot to be excited about when it comes to the Nokia Lumia 900. It’s everything we loved in the Nokia Lumia 800 and more.

More screen space (4.3-inch AMOLED), more photographic options (front-facing camera), more 3G speed (DC-HSDPA compatibility), more battery (1830mAh). But how does this all translate in the final hardware? Here’s what our US cousins are saying.

The Verge

Those hip chaps at The Verge can spot a techy style icon from the other side of the world, and their next champion appears to be the Nokia Lumia 900. “It may be the best looking phone on the market right now,” said the reviewer. In fact, “it reminded me of how stale and lacking in playfulness industrial design has become in this industry.” Amen to that, brother.

So it looks nice, but what about reliability? No problem on that front either: “I was happy to report that getting through a typical day of calls, lots of email, Twitter, and web browsing was no problem — even on a fairly constant LTE connection.” LTE, for those of you that don’t know, is the technology that’s emerged as the 4G standard in the US. It can be faster than broadband, but it’s a bit of a power hog.

Let’s have a final word on that Nokia design: “This is the Nokia I grew up with, and it’s clear the company hasn’t lost its ability to enchant through hardware.”

Over on Gizmodo, they continue the Nokia Lumia 900 love. “The Lumia 900 is a phone that every single person should consider owning,” says the reviewer. Why? Again, Nokia’s stellar design work gets a nod, as does the complimentary Microsoft Windows Phone OS: “The combination of Nokia’s spaceship hardware and Microsoft’s super-futuristic Metro vibe make the phone a handset of the future.”

There’s more on that bold design:”It’s an exquisite slab of super-responsive, clear glass and a bright, tough-as-a-brick body.” Speaking of the Lumia 900’s super-responsive glass, the reviewer claims that “Colors are, for the most part, terrific and vivid, and blacks are blacker than I’ve seen on any handset. Text pops with legibility and photos are sharp and vivid.”

The CNET reviewer labels the Nokia Lumia 900 its “favorite Windows Phone yet” thanks to its “bold look and the way that the phone’s style and screen make the Windows Phone interface pop.”

Bold looks, you say? Exactly how bold are we talking here? “Bold as an exclamation mark, the Lumia 900 has pure pop-art coursing through its electrical veins.” Oh. We see. That bold.

When it comes to the screen, CNET reckons that the Lumia 900 trumps its one true AMOLED rival: “In both brightness and richness, the Lumia 900 absolutely blows away the [Samsung] Focus S”. Impressive!

Finally, the Mashable Tech team found the Nokia Lumia 900 to be “a great smartphone” and – as the review headline makes clear – the “Best Windows Phone Ever”. We reckon the latter quote should be read in the style of the comic shop guy from The Simpsons for best effect.

The reviewer was pleasantly surprised to find “many of the same apps that I use regularly on iOS in the Windows Phone Marketplace.” He also claims that “Most of those apps look gorgeous on the Lumia 900′s 4.3-inch OLED screen”, and that this larger screen is “perfect for Windows Phone’s Metro interface”.

The reviewer concludes by stating that the Nokia Lumia 900 “is the device that Microsoft needs to show off how good Windows Phone can be”. We have a new Windows Phone champion, it seems!
