Nokia 808 PureView versus Apple iPhone 4S photo shootout

The Nokia 808 PureView is changing the way the cameras on smartphones are viewed. No longer are they simply second-cousins to digital cameras, PureView is leading the way. Want to se how it stacks up against the Apple iPhone 4S camera? Then read on and find out for yourself.

The Nokia 808 PureView is a 4-inch smartphone running Symbian Belle software but that’s not the full story as it features the brand new technology developed by Nokia called PureView. This camera technology uses some pretty crazy science to take a 41-Megapixel image that when processed gives you a final 5-Megapixel image that is perfect down to ever pixel.

Find out about the science behind the Nokia 808 PureView

The Nokia 808 PureView is still waiting for an official launch date here in the UK but it’s starting to roll out in other countries around the world. Yes, we’re jealous, which is why we’ve been keeping tabs on the news and reviews that have been appearing. That’s how we came across these shots from CNET Asia, which show how effectively the Nokia 808 PureView is against the ever popular Apple iPhone 4S.

Before anyone shouts ‘no fair, the iPhone only has an 8-Megapixel camera!’ it seems th guys over at CNET have thought of that and the test shots use the same settings. As article author, Rich Trenholm, points out ‘The 808 PureView is set to 8-megapixel resolution to match the iPhone, so this is a test of Nokia’s claims that the PureView technology is more than sheer brute megapixelage. Nokia reckons that each pixel in an 8-megapixel photo is made up of information from seven pixels on the sensor, filtering out image noise.’

Of the results, they go on to say, ‘The snaps certainly show more detail in the PureView’s photos, which also has a wider field of view’ which certainly seems to be the case. There are a couple of test shots where the iPhone looks to have the advantage but this could be down to colour saturation, which seems to be a debate that has been raging for years between the big camera manufacturers, as the eye interprets brighter colours as being sharper but not necessarily as realistic.

We think it’s a great piece and it’s well worth checking out the full article. If you’d like to see more images of the Nokia 808 PureView versus the Apple iPhone 4S then check out the Cnet Asia blog post.
