Burton app for Nokia Lumia Windows Phone 8 hands-on

burton-app-hands-on-09The Burton app is exclusive to Nokia Lumia smartphones running Windows Phone 8 and is a portal app like the World of Red Bull that brings your snow-boarding experiences together in one place with the addition of what could well be a hidden gem in the form of a special camera Lens. Find out more with our Burton app hands-on for Nokia Lumia.

Snowboard manufacturer Burton has something of a legacy with Nokia. It’s snow-boarding riders are sponsored by Nokia, we’ve seen some pretty impressive insulated carry cases for our Nokia Lumia smartphones hit the slopes and now we have this exclusive app for Windows Phone 8 that has been shown off at Mobile World Congress 2013.

Nokia Lumia 920 and beating sub-zero weather conditions

The Burton app is free to Nokia Lumia owners and is a 12MB download. It can’t be downloaded from the Windows Phone Store, you’ll only find it on your handset. We’ve downloaded it on our Nokia Lumia 620 but it works just as well on the more powerful Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820.

The Burton app opens with a nice and fresh Metro UI look that starts with the Menu that gives you an at-a-glance look of what the app offers. You’ll find a Forecast tab that allows you to see what the weather forecasts are like for resorts near you. What’s more, you can search for resorts further afield afield and even save them – break if you want to know the weather before you travel.

Tune Up is a specially created playlist that works through Nokia Music to bring you a pretty amazing array of high-energy music suited to listening to as you sky, or when you’re winding down afterwards.

However, the best part of the Burton app has to be the Sequencer, which works in many ways like a variation on Cinemagraph, in that you can record short clips of video within the app and then instantly edit and crop the footage so you can build up a sequence of events.

What’s great about the Sequencer is that you can go through your video clip frame by frame, keep the bits you want, edit out the gnarly bits and then save the final outcome as an image like the example at the top of the page.

It’s an amazing camera Lens for Windows Phone 8 that could easily have uses outside of snow-boarding, skate-boarders will love it for the same reasons, no doubt.

This wouldn’t be a snow-boarding app without the chance to see the latest gear on offer and the final section of the app taps into the Burton catalogue so you can see what’s out there. This is tied with the Burton US website so you may not be able to purchase any of the goods directly.

The Burton app is a great example of how a third-party can work with core Nokia features, such as Nokia Music and Nokia camera technology, to build something a little special. Even if you’re not a huge snow-boarding fan, then the app is worth checking out for the Lens alone.
