Nokia Lumia 620 Vs Huawei Ascend W1: Best price comparison

Published by Mike Browne March 14, 2013

nokia-lumia-620-ascend-w1The Nokia Lumia 620 is the most exciting entry-level Windows Phone 8 device on the market. It offers an amazing look, a great feature set and a price that is so tempting. What’s more, it offers better value than it’s closest rival, the Huawei Ascend W1. Here we take a look at what you get for your money.

The range of Windows Phone 8 smartphones on offer is increasing and while Nokia Lumia is still very much the dominant force, the likes of the HTC Windows Phone 8S and now the Huawei Ascend W1 are here to rival the Nokia Lumia 620.

O2 offers an amazing deal with the Nokia Lumia 620. You can pick it up on PAYG for just £149.99 (inc. VAT) and even comes with a free coloured shell, with a choice of five different colours including the exclusive Yellow and Orange versions.

We mention this as O2 has also started selling the Huawei Ascend W1 as a budget Windows Phone 8 offering. With a price of just £129.99 (inc. VAT), it’s certainly cheaper than the Nokia Lumia 620 but does it really offer better value?

We compared the Nokia Lumia 620 Vs Huawei Ascend W1 back in January and if you’re interested in seeing the full tech comparison you can check it out here.

The big difference between the Nokia Lumia 620 and Huawei Ascend W1 has to be in screen size, with the Lumia rival taking the edge with a larger 4-inch screen over the 3.8-inch display of the Nokia Lumia 620. They both use the same 800 x 480-pixel resolution, but the Lumia has the benefit of ClearBlack, so offers better use in outdoor situations, as well as a brighter display so images look sharper on the screen.

The Nokia Lumia 620 uses a 1GHz dual-core processor, while the Huawei Ascend W1 comes with a 1.2GHz dual-core variant. Both come with  512MB of RAM, so you’ll find they’ll offer great everyday performance running Windows Phone 8. The Nokia Lumia 620 comes with 8GB of internal memory, while the Huawei is a little lacklustre with just 4GB.

There is one area where the Huawei Ascend W1 has a clear advantage and that comes in the form of a larger battery. Even so, according to the tech spec on the O2 page, you’ll be able to get 10.5 hours of talk time from the Huawei Ascend W1, while the Nokia Lumia 620 offers 9.9 hours under the same conditions, so not really that big a difference.

However, where the Nokia Lumia 620 truly takes the edge is in the array of extra features and exclusive apps you simply won’t find on rivals like the Huawei Ascend W1. Apps such as Nokia Music with Nokia Mix Radio, Nokia HERE Maps, Nokia HERE Drive, Nokia HERE City Lens, as well as a wealth of camera Lens such as Cinemagraph, PhotoBeamer and Smart Shoot you simply won’t find on the Huawei Ascend W1, making the Nokia Lumia 620 the ideal choice for anyone looking for an entry-level Windows Phone 8 smartphone.

As you can see, Nokia is bringing so much more to the party than Huawei offers. So, you may save money initially when buying the Huawei Ascend W1 but are you getting the best value for money possible?
